A project proposition for the Hans Wilsdorf excellence price in october 2021.
Conquérir l‘inconnu intends to conquer the perception of individuals affected by vision deficiencies in relation to art. In this spirit, the project aims to create a mutual understanding, on one hand, for normal-sighted people towards people with limited vision and, on the other hand, for the latter in order to reveal how they perceive art with a limited or extended vision.
The intention is to create a project environment that enables both sides to explore and understand each other‘s vision in an experiential form. By examining various visual representations in this design project, Conquérir l‘inconnu creates thematic clarity and tangibility by offering the people a new visual experience. The focus of this work is to explore how people with differences in vision understand and perceive art. How do they experience art? How is art understood by a visually impaired person compared to a blind person? How do these people experience different art media? How does the perception of art differ between people who were born blind and those who have become blind in the course of their lives?
Exchange with concerned people is the primary source of information for understanding how people visually experience art. The physical implementation of the project is realized through a practical, experimental research.
Within this framework, possibilities of reconceptualizing people‘s differing visions are explored. The project is built on explaining the other‘s vision to both parties and creating an understanding of the other‘s visual capacity. The ultimate objective of this project is multifold: to create understanding, to enable a different view, to generate inclusion and rethink existing possibilities for alternative seeing, to expand them and generate new ones. The project intends to redefine the boundaries of the possible, to question and to re-exploit the experience of art. Conquérir l‘inconnu shows that having a limited visual perception does not mean that one is incapable of experiencing and interpreting art, but that one has one‘s own differentiated view of art that is equal to that of a person with normal vision. The idea here is to convey that there are two parallel visual universes, neither of which is more correct than the other, but both of which represent realities.
Conquérir l‘inconnu intends to visualize that perception can be experienced and reconstructed and thus reveals an individual and common production of reality. With my project I hope to encourage other people to explore new ways which allow to make art more accessible to everyone. In order to reduce the exclusivity of art consumption by the normal-sighted, change is indispensable. Therefore, it is the responsibility of normal-sighted people to advocate for people with visual impairments. Conquérir l‘inconnu illustrates that we can contribute to an essential change in art by giving everyone the opportunity to explore what is not visible to all.
